The Panthers put some depth and experience behind starting quarterback Cam Newton, signing Derek Anderson for two seasons through 2017 on Wednesday.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he has "tremendous confidence" in Anderson and that he can provide "stability to the quarterback position as a backup."
The financial terms of the deal were not announced.
Anderson joined the Panthers as a free agent in 2011 but didn't see much action over the following three seasons. He led the Panthers to an eventual second-straight NFC South title with two starts against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, both victories.
He went 65-of-97 for 701 yards and five touchdowns and no interceptions during the 2014 regular season.
