Bears will start Clausen, sit Cutler

CHICAGO - Jay Cutler will be benched in favor of backup Jimmy Clausen when the Chicago Bears host the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Cutler, the league's highest paid offensive player, leads the league in overall turnovers (24), 18 of which are interceptions, and is winless in his last three appearances for the Bears (5-9).

In those three contests, he threw six touchdowns and six interceptions, and in their last two, Chicago was outscored 59-0 before mounting failed comeback bids.

He has thrown 28 touchdowns this season, completing 66.1 percent of his pass attempts for 3,640 yards.

"We haven't been able to do the things that we want to get done," Bears coach Marc Trestman said Wednesday. "We're working towards that. But the answer to that is obvious. I'm trying to give you the most truthful answer, and that is, we've seen moments of it, but it's not where we need to go. It's not where we need to be. But it's not all about Jay. It's about our entire offense, working together to get it done."

Jimmy Clausen signed a one-year contract with the team this offseason though has not started an NFL game since 2010 with the Carolina Panthers, eventually replaced by Cam Newton.

The 27-year-old former Notre Dame starter has completed 3-of-9 passes this year for Chicago.

Detroit, who the Bears host at Soldier Field this Sunday, enjoy a three-game winning streak and post the league's best defense.
