McCoy cleared, will start for Redskins

ASHBURN, Va. - Washington Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy has been cleared by doctors and will start for the team against the New York Giants Sunday.

McCoy suffered aggravated nerves in his neck in the fourth quarter of the team's 24-0 loss to the Rams Sunday.

He participated in practice during the week and would take every first team snap in Friday's session, saying afterwards he felt no pain or discomfort in passing or running.

"I'm doing a lot better," McCoy said. "It has to continue to calm down. But I've seen significant recovery over the last few days."

Coach Jay Gruden noted that McCoy would see a specialist Friday, but that the appointment is a formality before his being officially cleared to start.

"We just want to make 100 percent sure there's no risk of him doing damage to his neck," he said. "Once he gets cleared there shouldn't be an issue."

McCoy would play two more series after the injury, though would be relieved by Robert Griffin near the two-minute warning.

Griffin would have started were McCoy not cleared, Jay Gruden said this week, though the coach also adding his belief that McCoy was the best option for the Redskins (3-10) right now.

"He's a tough guy. He's a good leader and players respond to him."
