Texans QB Mallett out for season

Houston, Tex. - Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett has been placed on season-ending injured reserve Monday, after the Houston Chronicle reported the 26-year-old suffered a torn pectoral muscle that will require surgery.

Mallett sustained the injury in Houston's Nov. 6th victory over Cleveland and was listed on their injury report the following week, listed as questionable for their next game, a home contest against Cincinnati.

He started that game, but struggled in the 22-13 defeat, completing less than half his 45 pass attempts for only 189 yards and an interception.

Texans coach Bill O'Brien did not confirm whether the injury is season-ending when he spoke at his press conference Monday, noting that Mallett was still being evaluated and no decision had been made.

The team has not announced who will start under center when they host the Titans this week.

Houston (5-6) started Mallett under center following their bye week, replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick, the 10-year veteran from Harvard who went 4-5 this season, throwing 11 touchdowns to to 8 interceptions.
