After the fiesta of misery that followed the Washington Redskins' first-team offensive effort on Thursday night, culminated in quarterback Robert Griffin III leaving the field with a concussion, the team settled themselves down to rally in a 21-17 victory over the Lions.
Though Kirk Cousins got the No. 2 honors in Cleveland one week ago, it was Colt McCoy who manned the relief players this time this time around, leading the Redskins (2-0) on two touchdown drives, going 5-for-6 on 80 yards passing, adding a 19 yard touchdown to wide receiver Reggie Bell.
But his fumble on the Lions 1 with seconds ticking in the first half still got to him.
"I thought it went well," McCoy said after the game. "Little bobbled snap down on the goal line, it was wet, we tried to make a play on 4th-down right before half time. That was a bummer. Wish we could have that one back, but overall, I thought we executed pretty well."
But he still couldn't help but feel for teammates Griffin and linebacker Adam Hayward.
"True veteran, true pro, one of my best friends on the team," McCoy said of Hayward, who will miss the entire season after tearing the ACL in his right knee. "To see him go down like that, man, it just took the wind out of you.
"And obviously, Robert. You don't want to see Robert down. I've talked to him though, so I think we're good there. But you know what, in preseason games like this, you want to come out clean and unfortunately that didn't happen for us tonight. My thought and prayers are with them."
McCoy said he was impressed with the ability of the offense to convert 3rd-down situations, going 8-for-9 with he and Cousins under center. With Griffin on the field, they went 0-for-4.
"I felt like we converted on third downs and when Kirk's group got in there, they were making big plays on third downs and moving the chains, and that's what it takes to win in this league."
McCoy also led an 80-yard touchdown drive, finished on rookie Matt Jones' 1 yard scoring rush.
