Whether or not a man can lose his job to injury in the NFL is still up for debate. But, after Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III walked off the field with his second career concussion on Thursday night, his head coach says his post will be likely waiting whenever he comes back into the fold.
Griffin was injured on the ugly fourth series of the Redskins' 21-17 exhibition victory over the Lions, putting his availability for the team's third preseason contest in doubt.
"We'll have to see," Gruden said when asked if his quarterback's potential absence on Aug. 29 against the Ravens would hinder his ability to start their regular season opener, when the club hosts Miami.
Griffin was 2-for-5 for 8 yards on Thursday, sacked three times, hit three more times, and fumbled twice. His injury came as he chased his unforced fumble on a 3rd-and-16 on the Redskins 17.
"I would imagine, depending on how long he is out, he is still going to be our starter," Gruden added. "We have to wait and go through the whole process and see how he recovers, see how fast he recovers. I have no idea as far as the third preseason game, fourth one, right now."
Griffin suffered a concussion in Week 5 of his rookie campaign in 2012, but would return the following week. The Redskins will have a clearer picture of his condition on Sunday when the team resumes their summer practice.
