Jay Gruden pleased with RG3's progress

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has not been one to mince words concerning his opinion of starting quarterback Robert Griffin III. Only now, as opposed to the end of last season, he has nothing but good things to say.

Griffin was himself pleased with his preseason debut in Cleveland on Thursday night, a three-point decision in Washington's favor. He would have been ecstatic had Pierre Garcon held on to what would have been a 61 yard touchdown in the first quarter.

But that was Garcon's fault, not Griffin's, and Jay Gruden said in what little offering he had from his starter in that game, his rebuilding project looks to be going in the right direction. That throw for Garcon, in particular, caught his eye. He praised his signal caller for setting his feet and adjusting to his receiver on the route.

"I just think his comfort in the pocket looked a little bit better," Gruden said, via the Associated Press. "We still have a long way to go to grade him, but we're happy with his progress. We've just got to continue to work with him and be positive and go from there."

Positivity certainly hasn't been lacking in the quarterback himself. Griffin told WJLA-TV (Washington) that he is "the best quarterback in the league" and that to think otherwise heading into the season would be wrong of him. Gruden isn't that confident yet, but it's been more positives than negatives so far.

"He threw [eight] balls," he said. "So we still have a long way to go to grade him but we're happy with his progress."
