Observations from Day 6 at Eagles camp

The Philadelphia Eagles took it a little slower and a little easier at training camp on Saturday after a pair of hard practices over the last two days.

- Chip Kelly's gang will make a return visit to Lincoln Financial Field for another open session on Sunday before taking Monday off.

- Kelly said he's very impressed with the progress Walter Thurmond has made so far in camp. His experience working as an inside cornerback working in the nickel, he says, is helping him greatly in his transition to the safety position after playing at cornerback with the Seahawks and Giants.

- Sam Bradford was excellent again. Right tackle Lane Johnson said on Friday that he hadn't seen a quarterback as accurate "in a long time," and on Saturday Bradford built on that effort by putting in a solid follow up. Still no sign of trouble with his knee. He looked very confident in the pocket, managing the offense efficiently downfield. He began the day completing eight of his first nine passes, finishing 12-of-15 and a touchdown to Miles Austin in red zone drills.

- The Eagles continued inserting as many players into as many roles with as many teams as they can. Because the reps are so numerous and evenly spread out, players who are destined to start and those who will not often see time together. That variety, they hope, will help them make a decision on the right guard position. They don't have anything down yet for that spot, and are waiting for the live action the preseason will bring. Julian Vandervelde saw first team play on Saturday. John Moffitt, Matt Tobin, and Andrew Gardiner have as well. Allen Barbre presumed the left guard for now.

- Zach Ertz and Mychal Kendricks returned to practice after missing Friday. "They just had a nagging something," Kelly said. Linebacker Kiko Alonso missed practice, though, as he still is undergoing the concussion protocol after a ding to the head two days earlier. Kelly said he isn't worried about it, with Alonso not having a history of that injury at Oregon or with the Bills.

- Something else that's been nagging is the relative absence of running back DeMarco Murray. He was at camp and ready to go on Saturday, as he hadn't been for two of these days, but he was scarcely used. He sat to one side as his No. 2 and 3 took the majority of first team reps. Murray has largely been a spectator even when healthy as it becomes clear that coaches are looking to preserve him for when it counts. The Cowboys overworked him last season, and with training camp mostly a passing contest, Eagles coaches want to keep any potential injuries at bay.

- Connor Barwin stayed behind by himself after practice was over to work on his pass rushing. It's that dedication that pushed him to collect 14.5 sacks, the NFL's fourth-best last season.

- Tim Tebow wasn't at his best for a second straight day. He didn't see any time in the 11-drills and wasn't pretty in one of his turns quarterbacking the 7s. His accuracy failed him as he went through his progressions. A non-passing role is the most likely destination for him.
