It's Tebow-Time at Philadelphia Eagles headquarters.
Head coach Chip Kelly is getting "increasingly excited" about the opportunity quarterback Tim Tebow can bring to his team, according to Dianna Marie-Russini of ESPN.
Kelly has been intrigued by what Tebow has provided his team in practice and in their first exhibition game. And, barring some extreme mistake or injury, is almost assured a roster spot this autumn.
Tebow rushed for a touchdown with the fourth team in the Eagles' 36-10 victory over the Colts last Sunday and went 6-for-12 passing.
His progress has been moving in the right direction since arriving in Philadelphia, earning praise not only from Kelly but offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day. He had spent this offseason with passing guru Tom House at USC to improve his throwing motion after sitting out the last two seasons to do television work.
The play of No. 3 Matt Barkley has also improved Tebow's chances of making the roster.
Barkley tossed five interceptions in training camp this summer, more than the other three quarterbacks combined. Tebow, though at times hampered by accuracy issues, only threw one pick.
But his role may lie elsewhere. Despite his improvements throwing the ball, Kelly and the Eagles are thinking of inserting him in special short-yardage situations and two-point converstion opportunties. The NFL moved the point-after kicks back to the 33-yard line, and Philadelphia kicker Cody Parkey missed two kicks last Sunday. That, in Kelly's mind, is room for a positive change. With his habit of going for two, the chance at running Tebow from the 2 looks to be a welcome addition to the playbook.
