Eagles running back DeMarco Murray was held out of the team's first preseason game last Sunday, to much speculation, rumor, and worry about his health.
Now, he says, he's not sure if he'll play in the Eagles' second exhibition game against the Ravens on Saturday, either. But he also made it clear that he will be on the field Week 1 when Philadelphia visits Atlanta to open the regular season.
"I played four years," he said. "I'm very comfortable with the offense and myself. I'm getting a lot of great work here. It all depends on what they want to do. . . they know what's best for the team."
What's best for the team has involved relatively little of him thus far. He missed some time in training camp with what coaches called low hydration, then again with "an illness."
And while the Eagles took it easy in camp on Wednesday, a joint practice with Baltimore, their next opponent, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said his starting tailback, acquired in March, is ready to go right now. Though he said he "wouldn't put a number on it" when asked to what degree.
"You definitely want to get a touch or two here in the preseason just to get a few hits in and whatnot," he said.
Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has also said there were valid concerns about what Murray could do after the heavy workload the Cowboys gave him to last season. Murray led the NFL with 1,845 yards and 13 touchdowns on a league-high 392 carries, eighty more than former Eagles back LeSean McCoy.
Which may be why the team was keen to add Ryan Mathews as their No. 2 in the backfield.
But that toil Murray endured in 2014 doesn't seem to be the reason Murray has been used to lightly this preseason, if you ask the man himself.
"No, no he doesn't at all," Murray said when asked if Kelly seemed concerned about it. "I don't think it's a big deal at all. [Kelly] is doing what is best for the team and I'm all for it. It feels like certain days there might not be as much work but I'm for it. They know what it best for the team."
What's best for the team looks finally to be involving Sam Bradford under center Saturday, after sitting last Sunday's game with the Colts. Whether or not Murray will be lined up behind him remains to be seen.
