Brandon Marshall: I'm the only one who held Cutler to account

For a guy who won't talk to his former teammates, he doesn't seem to mind talking about them to anyone else he comes across.

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall, traded to the Jets from the Bears several months ago, hasn't been shy about letting people know his opinion of his former club -- and its quarterback, Jay Cutler, who said recently that "no one really likes their ex-girlfriend after a breakup."

Marshall and Cutler came into the league together in 2006 with Denver before being re-united with the Bears on 2012.

That all changed in 2014. Cutler led football in turnovers and Marshall finished with the second-worst numbers of his career in receptions (61) and yards (721). The Bears stumbled to a 5-11 mark.

It had an effect on their relationship.

"We didn't talk much during the year," Marshall said. "We still haven't talked. That is sad. I don't think there is anybody in the league that had more chemistry than us. If we had a slant route, I was going to go in the hole and he would find me. We saw the game the right way. I felt like that is something we could have built on."

But build on that, they did not, and talk much more, they will not. Marshall said it was the amount of time both had put in, and the lack of reward for that work, that was the last straw.

"[F]or me last year, I felt like, when we are going on 10 years, nine, 10 years in the league -- it's time to get it," he said. "I felt like I was the only one in the organization that had the 'huevos' to hold [Cutler] accountable. It didn't go the way I wanted it to go."
