Observations from Day 3 at Eagles camp

The Philadelphia Eagles took their show on the road to Lincoln Financial Field on Tuesday for the third day of training camp. Here's what we noticed --

1. Good news and bad news about Sam Bradford. The good news: he didn't get injured. The bad news: he didn't look so good anyway. Playing two series with the first team, the most so far in camp, he one-hopped an open Jordan Matthews and fumbled a snap before badly overthrowing Miles Austin. News also emerged Tuesday that the team was interested in offering Bradford a short-term extension, though nothing has yet come from that.

2. The Eagles worked on some interesting offensive formations that had the tailbacks shift into five receiver sets prior to the snaps. If ever there was a place for Darren Sproles to show his stuff, it's in situations like these. The current No. 3 on the backfield's depth chart, however, it would take some doing to mix him behind DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews.

3. Which reminds us, Murray made an appearance in the team drills on Tuesday after missing the first day. The Eagles' back said, and Chip Kelly confirmed, that was a coach's decision to keep him out. Kelly said Murray's hydration level was too low and that subjected him to a higher probability of injury. Considering the workload Dallas gave him last season, that's something the Eagles would like to avoid at all costs.

4. Matt Tobin started at right guard for a second straight day. He and Andrew Gardiner look to be the favorites to fill Todd Herremans' old position, though the decision seems a long way off. Chip Kelly said before practice he rarely cares who takes first-team snaps at a lot of spots because, considering the high number of reps at their camp, most players will get time anyway. Allen Barbre is still entrenched at left guard between Jason Peters and Jason Kelce. That job looks to be his.

5. The people seem to take to Tim Tebow. He elicited the loudest cheers from the faithful, who filled out most of the lower deck at the Linc. He's said he wants to be an NFL quarterback, but one wonders if he could do more for himself, and this team, by lending himself to a Sproles-esque role: catching passes on zone-reads, short yardage rushes, and the like. He looked good on those plays Tuesday, though he was stripped by corner Denzel Rice, who also came away with a Tebow interception, one of two in his capacity under center.

6. After Travis Long fell victim to his second ACL tear in a year, the outside linebacker roll call just got shorter. Chip Kelly said Brad Jones and Brandon Hepburn will compete for a place behind Connor Barwin and Brandon Graham, and Marcus Smith may finally get a chance to show something. Kelly said Kiko Alonso will stay with the inside group, so that's out.

7. Zach Ertz is still on course to be a receiving threat as advertised. Playing with the second-team, he made a good catch off Mark Sanchez, who threw behind him. He was slow to get up on that one, but walked off on his own and looked fine afterwards, catching three more from Sanchez.

8. The Eagles made some roster changes again on Tuesday, releasing receiver Davante Davis and signing wide-out Josh Reese.
